Welcome to the Health and Social Care Department
Although students do not study HSC in key stage 3, students are able to study BTEC Level 1/ 2 Tech Award in Health and Social Care, as one of their options, in year 10 and 11. It is an extremely popular option with many students continuing to study Health and Social Care at college and gaining employment in this area.
Students are given the opportunity to gain an insight into aspects of the health and social care environment ranging from:
- Human lifespan through all six life stages
- Factors affecting development
- Effects of life events on growth and development
- Health care system
- Social care system
This is a vocational course which is equivalent to one GCSE.
The course is divided into 3 Components. Components 1 and 2 are assignment based units which are completed under exam conditions once content has been learnt. Here they develop their understanding of a range of issues which are transferable to life outside of the classroom. Component 3 is an exam unit which combines knowledge from Components 1 and 2 and also introduces them to a range of health indicators such as BMI, Blood Pressure and Heart rates.
Component 1: Human Life Span
This component focuses on the growth and development of individuals and is split into the following topics:
- Life stages
- Factors affecting growth and development
- Different types of Life Events and how they affect growth and development.
Students will complete 4 assignments linked to this component.
Component 2: Health and Social Care Services and the Barriers to accessing them
This component focuses on:
- Health Care services including health conditions
- Social Care services and how they meet individual needs
- Types of support – formal, informal and voluntary
- Barriers to accessing services
- Skills and attributes needed when delivering care and benefits to the individuals
- Care Values in health and social care
- Obstacles individuals requiring care may face
Component 3: Health and Wellbeing
This component focuses on:
- Knowledge from Components 1 and 2 applied to exam style questions
- Interpreting Health Indicators
- Person Centred Approach
